The renowned Qwabe Twins, Virginia and Viggy Qwabe, recently participated in the vibrant Umkhosi Womhlanga (Reed Dance Festival), joining thousands of Zulu maidens in a celebration of culture, tradition, and personal values.
In an interview with Daily Sun, Virginia expressed the significance of attending the festival, highlighting its role in preserving their connection to their heritage. Viggy also shared insights into how the event strengthened their understanding of Zulu traditions.
“Umkhosi Womhlanga teaches us about our culture. We’ve learned that many young women draw strength from it, and we feel empowered by participating,” Virginia said.
As noted by City Press, the Reed Dance Festival is not just about traditional singing and dancing, but also serves as a cultural education for Zulu maidens. Older women provide guidance, emphasizing the importance of personal values, cultural respect, and empowerment.
Moreover, The Witness reported the participation of Dr. Ngipheni Ngcobo, a 73-year-old attendee. Dr. Ngcobo, who has been part of Umkhosi Womhlanga since her youth, proudly upholds her personal values and was honored with an honorary doctorate from the United Christ Bible Institute for her lifelong commitment.
